Heavy Wreckers for a Port City Built on Freight

Heavy Duty Towing in Mobile, AL means recovering the big units: tractor-trailers, box trucks, motorcoaches, dump trucks, RVs and heavy equipment. We cover Mobile County and Baldwin County, from the Mississippi line at Grand Bay to Daphne, Loxley and Robertsdale on the east side of the bay. Dispatch answers 24/7. Call (251) 355-4026 and give us your exact location, your unit and what happened, and we will tell you honestly how long it will take to reach you.

The roads we work

Mobile sits where I-10 and I-65 meet. I-65 starts here, at I-10 exit 20, and runs 366 miles north through Montgomery and Birmingham to the Tennessee line. I-165 is a short elevated spur that runs 5 miles from I-65 in Prichard to downtown. I-10 enters Alabama at the Mississippi line near Grand Bay, runs east through Theodore and Tillmans Corner, passes the I-65 interchange and then goes under the Mobile River through the George Wallace Tunnel. On the other side, the Jubilee Parkway carries I-10 about 7.5 miles across the top of Mobile Bay to Spanish Fort and Daphne, then on through Loxley and Robertsdale to the Florida line at the Perdido River.

US 43 starts in Prichard and runs north through Satsuma and Saraland toward Tuscaloosa. US 90 and US 98 run together around the bay, and the truck route for both crosses the Mobile River on the Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge. West of Semmes, US 98 heads for Mississippi, and a four-lane bypass on State Route 158 opened there in October 2023.

Tunnels, bridges and hazmat

The George Wallace Tunnel is about 3,000 feet long and carries four lanes of I-10. A sharp curve on its western approach causes long backups when anything stops. Wikipedia lists the clearance at 16 feet, so tall loads need to check posted signs. The older Bankhead Tunnel is closed to large trucks: only cars and pickups may use it, with a 12-foot clearance. Hazmat loads traveling west on I-10 are required to cross the Mobile River on the Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge instead of either tunnel. That bridge is 7,291 feet long with 140 feet of clearance over the river. When you call, tell us if any part of your load is hazmat. It changes the route we take and the equipment we send.

The port and the freight behind it

The Alabama State Port Authority runs Mobile's public terminals, which handle containers, bulk, breakbulk, roll-on/roll-off and heavy lift cargo. Five Class I railroads and two interstate systems reach the terminals. The container terminal sits at Choctaw Point, with APM Terminals as the lead operator. Out at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, Airbus assembles A320-family and A220 aircraft, and more than 70 companies share the 1,650-acre site. All of it moves on trucks, and when a loaded chassis, a flatbed of steel or a box truck of parts breaks down, we handle the tow and the recovery. Commercial towing near the terminals often means a chassis or container that a yard tractor cannot move anymore.

Weather that puts trucks on the shoulder

Mobile averaged 66.3 inches of rain a year over a 30-year span in a 2007 study, which ranked it the wettest city in the contiguous 48 states. Hurricanes matter more than the average. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 pushed an 11.45-foot surge into downtown Mobile and damaged the Battleship Parkway and the Jubilee Parkway. Hurricane Sally in 2020 moved slowly and caused significant damage, and Hurricane Zeta hit about a month later. Fog on Mobile Bay set off a pileup of about 200 vehicles on March 20, 1995. When the Bayway closed during the January 2014 ice storm, ALDOT had no spreader equipment to sand or salt it. I-65 has a contraflow plan that sends all lanes north from Mobile to Montgomery during a hurricane evacuation. We plan around all of it.

What to have ready when you call

  • Interstate or highway, direction, and the mile marker or exit
  • The nearest town or landmark
  • Unit type: tractor-trailer, straight truck, bus, RV, dump truck or equipment
  • Weight class and whether it is loaded, with what
  • Whether any load is hazmat
  • What is wrong: breakdown, flat, accident, rollover, stuck
  • Who is paying: driver, fleet, insurer or broker

Stay out of the traffic lane. Wait behind the guardrail and set your triangles.

Truck stops and where drivers stall

Truck stop directories list a Pilot at I-10 exit 13 in Theodore with 65 parking spaces, a Pilot on US 43 near I-65 exit 19 in Satsuma, and a Love's at I-10 exit 44 in Loxley with 50 parking spaces. Many calls come from the lots and ramps around those exits, and from the shoulders between them.

Common Questions

How much does heavy duty towing cost in Mobile, AL?

Published rate sheets from other states show a heavy tow hook-up of about $450 plus $9.50 to $10 per mile, recovery with a heavy wrecker at about $350 to $850 per hour, a rotator at about $790 to $1,500 per hour, and storage at about $65 to $100 per day. Your written invoice estimate is the price.

Can you tow a semi through the George Wallace Tunnel?

Tunnels are routed case by case. Wikipedia lists the clearance at 16 feet, and hazmat loads traveling west on I-10 must use the Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge instead. Tell dispatch your height and your load and we will plan the route.

How do you move a big rig that breaks down on the Bayway?

The Jubilee Parkway runs about 7.5 miles across the top of Mobile Bay, with little room to work. We send a heavy duty tow truck, set up traffic control first, and tow the unit off the bridge to a safe spot before any repair. Tell dispatch your direction of travel and the nearest exit so we can come at it from the right side.

What do you need to know when I call?

Your interstate or highway, direction, mile marker or exit, the unit type and weight class, whether it is loaded and with what, whether anything is hazmat, what is wrong, and who is paying.

Do you answer at night and on holidays?

Dispatch answers 24/7. After-hours work is billed as shown on your written invoice estimate.

Can you bill my fleet or my insurance company?

Yes. Tell dispatch who is paying: driver, fleet, insurer or broker, and we set up the billing on the call.

Do you cover the Bayway and Baldwin County?

Yes. We cover the Jubilee Parkway across Mobile Bay and I-10 through Spanish Fort, Daphne, Loxley and Robertsdale to the Florida line.
