The Tri-Stack at the Top of Mobile
Heavy Duty Towing in Prichard starts with one interchange. Interstates 65 and 165 meet here, and for any rig heading into or out of downtown Mobile, Prichard is the choke point. The city sits in central Mobile County, had 19,322 residents in the 2020 census, and borders Mobile on the north side. Call (251) 355-4026 and tell dispatch which ramp you are on.
The interchange
On the I-65 mile log, exit 8 in Prichard is US 45 (St. Stephens Road) and exit 9 is I-165, described as a tri-stack interchange. I-165 is a 5.07-mile elevated spur that runs southeast to downtown Mobile, opened October 28, 1994. Several of its ramps are incomplete, so some connections work only from the northbound or only from the southbound side. A driver who misses a ramp can end up on a stretch with no easy turnaround. If you have to stop, say whether you are on the stack itself, on I-165, or on the I-65 mainline.
US 45 and US 43
US 45 runs through Prichard southwest of the city center and then southeast about 4 miles to downtown Mobile. In the other direction it runs northwest 27 miles to Citronelle. US 43 begins in Prichard at an intersection with US 90, and the early settlement grew along Telegraph Road, which is now US 43. Heading north from Prichard, US 43 is three lanes with a center turn lane before it widens to four at Craft Highway in Chickasaw. A center turn lane means a disabled truck there can block turning traffic in both directions, which changes how we set up the scene.
A company town and a rail town
Prichard began as a settlement in the 1830s along Telegraph Road and was named for Cleveland Mason Prichard, who developed a vegetable-shipping point serving markets in the North and East. It was incorporated on September 16, 1925. During World War II it became a company town, with Mobile shipbuilders building worker housing here. The population peaked at 47,371 in 1960. The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad runs through the area, and older rail crossings are one more place a long trailer can hang up.
What the shipyard decline left behind
Shipbuilding and paper mills grew along the waterfront after 1900, and the closure of the Scott Paper and International Paper plants in the 1980s and 1990s cost the city many jobs. Large industrial parcels and wide, older streets remain. Trucks still cut through to reach the waterfront, the interstate and the Mobile side of the river. Many of the calls here are through-traffic breakdowns rather than local deliveries.
