Last Exits Before the Delta

Heavy Duty Towing in Creola covers a city of 1,936 people (2020 census) that stretches over 16.7 square miles in northern Mobile County. About 14 miles north of downtown Mobile on US 43, it is a long, thin place with a lot of road and very few services between exits. Call (251) 355-4026 with your mile marker and we will get started.

Interstate 65 through Creola

I-65 crosses Creola with two exits: Exit 19 (US 43) and Exit 22 (Sailor Road). The mile log lists Exit 19 as the connection to Satsuma and Mobile's northern suburbs. After Exit 22, the interstate crosses the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta on the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge, which the log places at mile 24.220. A truck that breaks down between 22 and the bridge has little room and few places to pull out. Give us the mile marker, not just the exit.

What the geography does to a breakdown

The Mobile River forms the eastern border of Creola and the Baldwin County line. The city is 16.7 square miles, of which 1.0 square mile is water, and the elevation is just 20 feet. Low, wet ground near the delta means that a shoulder that looks solid can hold less than it appears to. For heavy units we plan around that before we decide how to winch or lift.

Hurricane evacuation on I-65

I-65 can be converted into an evacuation route in which all lanes flow northbound from Mobile to Montgomery, called contraflow. During an evacuation, every disabled truck becomes a bigger problem because there is no free lane to go around it. If you are heading out ahead of a storm, check fluids, tires and air lines before you leave. If something does fail, call us as early as you can. Dispatch answers 24/7, and we give honest arrival estimates, which may be long when the roads are full.

A rail line, an old name

Creola was named for the first settler in the area, who was Creole. A post office opened in 1885, and the community appears on 1870s maps on the Mobile and Alabama Grand Trunk rail line. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1978. In 2013, Creola and Saraland explored a merger, and a cited reference reports that Creola voters rejected it. The city borders Saraland to the west and Satsuma to the southwest.

US 43 north

US 43 continues north of Satsuma as a four-lane divided highway running roughly parallel to the Mobile River, and a trumpet interchange near Calvert serves a steel mill between the highway and the river. Heavy trucks bound for those industrial sites use the same roads as everything else. If your problem is at a business or plant entrance, tell us whether the site will let a wrecker in.
