Wartime Shipyard, Tight Streets
Heavy Duty Towing in Chickasaw serves a compact city of 6,457 people (2020 census) packed into 4.56 square miles of eastern Mobile County, where trucks share narrow streets with homes. Interstate 65 passes along the west side with access at Exit 10 (West Lee Street), and US 43 runs through the middle. Dispatch answers at (251) 355-4026.
Built for a shipyard
Chickasaw began as a company town owned by Chickasaw Shipyard for its workers. Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation bought it in 1940, and the city grew during the World War II defense buildup. Leedy Investment Company bought the village in 1946. Later shipbuilding downturns cost jobs, and the population has fallen since its 1960 peak. A town laid out around a shipyard has short blocks, tight corners and industrial parcels beside housing. Long trailers turn badly here.
The Port of Chickasaw
The Port of Chickasaw is in the eastern part of the city, on Chickasaw Creek, a tidal arm of the Mobile River that forms the northeast border. Port-area calls are different from interstate calls. Trucks may be loaded with cargo that needs a flatbed or a lowboy plan, or they may be empty trailers waiting in line. Tell us which facility or gate you are near and what is on the trailer. We will tell you what equipment is needed.
US 43 and Craft Highway
US 43 (Telegraph Road and North Craft Highway) is the main road. It runs south to Mobile, about 5 miles to downtown, and north toward Jackson. Coming north from Prichard, US 43 is three lanes with a center turn lane, then widens to four at the Craft Highway intersection in Chickasaw. A truck that stops at that change from three lanes to four is in a spot where drivers shift lanes. The wrecker has to be placed so that traffic can see it from far enough back.
Borders and neighbors
Mobile borders Chickasaw to the east, Prichard to the south and west, and Saraland to the north. That means a truck can break down in one city and be towed across three jurisdictions in a few miles. When you call, give us the nearest street, and we will work out which agency to expect on scene.
Give dispatch these details
- West Lee Street, Craft Highway, Telegraph Road or a creek-side road
- Northbound or southbound, and the last cross street you passed
- What you are driving, how heavy it is, and whether the trailer is loaded
- Whether a facility will release the unit or you are on a public road
- The party who will approve the invoice
The interstate side
I-65 begins at I-10 and runs north as a three-lane freeway. Exit 9 is the I-165 tri-stack in Prichard, and Exit 10 is West Lee Street in Chickasaw. A truck that drifts onto the Exit 10 ramp from the stack is dealing with traffic that has just merged from two roads. North of Saraland's exit 13 the lanes drop to two. If you break down in this stretch, the mile marker and the next exit are the two things we need most.
