A Citrus Town on a Truck Corridor
Heavy Duty Towing in Satsuma is mostly about one road. US 43 runs through this city of 6,749 people (2020 census) in northeastern Mobile County and crosses Interstate 65 on its northern edge, and a lot of freight and RV traffic uses that crossing. Downtown Mobile is about 13 miles south. Call (251) 355-4026 with your location.
A name from an orchard
Farmers introduced satsuma oranges from Japan in 1878, a gift from Emperor Meiji. The area was called Fig Tree Island until the town was named Satsuma in 1915. A 1910 orchard had about 100 acres of pecan and satsuma trees, and a packing house went up in 1922. The first municipal election was held April 6, 1959, after a town charter plan was approved that year. Satsuma's school system separated from Mobile County in 2011. Ditches and trees along the smaller roads leave a wide trailer little room.
The US 43 and I-65 crossing
US 43 crosses I-65 on Satsuma's northern edge. Farther north, US 43 continues as a four-lane divided highway running roughly parallel to the Mobile River, and a trumpet interchange near Calvert serves a steel mill between the highway and the river. For truckers that means steady steel and heavy industrial traffic on a road that also carries families headed to local schools and ball fields. A breakdown on US 43 can back up a lot of both.
Small city, small streets
Satsuma covers 7.40 square miles at an elevation of 23 feet. It borders Saraland to the southwest, Creola to the northeast and an undeveloped part of Mobile to the southeast. Gunnison Creek, a tidal tributary of Bayou Sara, forms the eastern edge. That puts low, wet ground close to many residential streets. A bus, RV or truck that turns off the main road to find a place to stop can sink into a shoulder faster than expected. If you can, stay on the pavement and call us before you try to drive out.
Common calls here

What to tell dispatch
- Which side of I-65 you are on, and whether you are northbound or southbound on US 43
- The nearest cross street or business
- Unit type, length and gross weight
- Whether passengers or cargo are on board
- Whether the payer is you, a fleet, an insurer or a broker
Ways in and out
On the I-65 mile log, exit 19 is US 43 and lists Satsuma among its destinations. In a hurricane evacuation, I-65 can be converted so that all lanes flow northbound from Mobile to Montgomery, and the city's exits fill up with traffic. A disabled truck on a ramp then becomes a real obstacle. If a storm is coming, get your service done early and leave with a full tank.
