A Port City Where Heavy Trucks Never Stop
Heavy Duty Towing in Mobile means recovering semis, box trucks, buses, RVs, dump trucks and equipment haulers in a city of 187,041 people (2020 census) that is the seat of Mobile County. Mobile is Alabama's second-most populous city and its only deep-water port, so tractor-trailers are part of daily traffic here. Dispatch answers 24/7 at (251) 355-4026.
How the city got here
French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, founded Mobile in 1702 at a site about 27 miles upriver. The settlement moved to its present location in 1711. Mobile was incorporated as a town on January 20, 1814, and as a city on December 17, 1819. A city that old has older blocks downtown, and tight corners and parked cars there are normal for a long trailer.
Three interstates meet here
Interstate 10 crosses the city east to west. Interstate 65 starts at I-10 at exit 20 in a directional-T interchange, and from there it is the main road north toward Montgomery. Interstate 165 is a 5.07-mile elevated spur that runs from Water Street downtown north to I-65 at Prichard, and it opened on October 28, 1994. Because it is elevated for its whole length, a wreck on I-165 can mean a recovery on a structure with no shoulder to work from. Tell the dispatcher which ramp or deck you are on.
The river crossings
I-10 drops into the George Wallace Tunnel to pass under the Mobile River. The tunnel opened February 9, 1973, is 3,000 feet long and carries four lanes, with a listed clearance of 16 feet. Approaching it, the freeway narrows to four lanes inside the Water Street interchange. East of the tunnel, the Jubilee Parkway viaducts cross the northern end of Mobile Bay for about 7 miles by milepost. Downtown, US 98 Truck crosses the river on the Cochrane-Africatown USA Bridge, a cable-stayed span 7,291 feet long with 140 feet of clearance below. A breakdown inside the tunnel or on a long viaduct needs a different plan than a breakdown on a ramp, so give us the exact milepost or the exit you passed last.
Port, plant and airport freight
The Alabama State Port Authority owns and operates the public terminals at the Port of Mobile, which the Corps of Engineers ranked ninth in the nation by tonnage in 2014. Its container, general cargo and bulk facilities tie into two interstate systems and five Class I railroads. The Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley covers 1,650 acres about 3 miles south of the central business district, and Airbus opened its A320 family assembly plant there on September 14, 2015. Major industry also includes steel, shipbuilding, construction and manufacturing. That mix puts container chassis, flatbeds, oversize loads and heavy equipment on the same roads as commuters.
Rain and storms
A 2007 study ranked Mobile the wettest city in the contiguous 48 states, with 66.3 inches of average annual rainfall over 30 years. Low ground near the river floods, and hurricanes have hit the area repeatedly, including Frederic in 1979, Opal in 1995, Ivan in 2004, Katrina in 2005, and Sally and Zeta in 2020. Wet pavement and soft shoulders are the reasons a loaded rig can slide off a ramp and bury its drive axles. We plan the pull around the ground, not just the weight.

Mobile Questions
Can you recover a truck that breaks down inside the George Wallace Tunnel?
Tunnel and bridge scenes need a plan before anyone rolls. Give the dispatcher your direction, how far in you are and whether the unit is blocking a lane. We give an honest arrival estimate on the call.
Do you handle trucks stuck near the port and container yards?
Yes. Tell us the gate, road and whether a container is on the chassis. Loaded containers change the equipment we send.
Can you reach a wreck on elevated I-165?
We can. Tell us the ramp or deck you are on and whether traffic is moving past you, so the scene can be set up safely.
Will you answer during a hurricane warning?
Dispatch answers 24/7. Roads may be closed or flooded, so the dispatcher will tell you honestly what can be reached and when.
